Fathia Kente Cloth/ Wall Hanging
Fathia Kente Cloth/ Wall Hanging
Fathia is a beautiful tapestry, featuring the iconic sugar cube and champion zig zag design from Ghana. The zig zag, also called Zor Megbe Megbe (walk backwards)as in those days the forefathers walked backwards to confuse their enemies. This kente is named after Kwame Nkrumah's wife, who made it popular. This piece holds cultural significance as it is worn by chiefs and queen mothers for its dignified appearance. This cloth finds itself in the peace collection as Kwame Nkrumah was the prime minister of the Gold Coast when Ghana received her independence in 1957. Fathia, Nkrumah's wife was of Egyptian decent and Fathia means victory in Arabic. Fathia was a strong, devoted, and beautiful woman.
This kente was hand woven by Sampson and is truly a one of a kind. The story and regality of the cloth alone make it so special.
